The use of solvents in paint primers is an industry-wide challenge. At Vauxhall, we’re committed to reducing emissions throughout our manufacturing operations and supply chain. So we manage traditional solvents through recycling, conversion to energy and superheating the gases to break them down.
We’re now also using ‘waterborne’ paint on our new vehicles. Waterborne paint still contains solvent – approximately 5 to 7 percent compared to the 50 to 80 percent found in traditional paint – but it uses water as the main carrier for the colour pigments.
At our Ellesmere Port plant, the Vauxhall Astra is painted with waterborne primer and base-coat using robotic electrostatic application. The final, clear coat is solvent-based.
