Due for production in 2012, the electrifying 100mph Ampera will be the first-ever, electrically driven car capable of everyday zero emission driving. Thanks to GM's groundbreaking electric propulsion technology, called Voltec, it operates differently from other advanced propulsion systems. The lithium ion battery can be charged from a 240V socket in 3 hours. With 0-60mph acceleration in about 9 seconds, it's like driving a fun sports car in silence!
Extended Range Electric Vehicle (E-Rev)
The Ampera's wheels are turned electrically at all times and all speeds. For short trips up to 40 miles, the Ampera runs only on lithium-ion battery power. However, you don't need to worry about range anxiety - as you will not be left stranded by an empty battery. When the battery's energy is depleted, a small efficient combustion engine provides electricity to power the electric drive unit while simultaneously sustaining the charge of the battery.
The Ampera is different from a hybrid or plug-in hybrid in that the vehicle's wheels are always propelled by an electric drive unit. The Ampera does not use fuel while driving within the 40-mile battery range.
