ASTRA'S NEW 1.6 DIESEL: DRIVING DOWN COSTS

ALL-NEW 94g/km* DIESEL FOR ASTRA

15-Nov-2013

The New Astra 1.6 Diesel

The British-built Astra is to benefit from Vauxhall’s new generation of lightweight and compact 1.6 litre turbo diesels, with the 110PS version showing a reduction up to 15% in emissions, and improvement of up to 16% in economy over the current 1.7 litre equivalents. Vauxhall will phase out the current 1.3CDTi and 1.7CDTi engine ranges over the next year to allow Businesses time to adapt their Fleet policies.

The first questions to be asked from a Fleet Decision Maker or Company Car Driver perspective concerns CO2 emissions and fuel economy - and the answers won’t disappoint.

  • 110PS engine: from 94g/km* and up to 78.5mpg*, hatchback
  • 110PS engine: from 99g/km* and up to 76.3mpg*, Sports Tourer
  • 136PS engine: from 104g/km and up to 72.4mpg, hatchback and Sports Tourer

Those figures not only lead to considerable financial savings over the current generation 1.7-litre Astra models – but also over the immediate rivals from Ford and Volkswagen. A further benefit to your bottom line is that only the Astra 1.6CDTi (110PS) hatchback qualifies for 100% first year Writing Down Allowance, as it sits within the 0-95g/km band.

Taken over a typical 3 year/60,000 mile ownership period, with diesel fuel cost at £1.40/litre, the results are:

CLEAN-SHEET DESIGN

This 1.6CDTi 16v ecoFLEX Start/Stop engine represents the start of a new ‘family’ of diesel engines for Vauxhall, and shares virtually no components with its predecessors. As the company’s first all-aluminium diesel engine, it also benefits from the down-sizing of almost all components, helping cut some 20kg over the 1.7 litre it replaces. But the reduction in capacity does not mean less power - there’s up to 136PS available, 6PS more than the 1.7 developed. More importantly for ‘real world’ motoring, is the tremendous boost in torque, both versions show a 20Nm increase over the 1.7 unit, with an output at 300Nm and 320Nm respectively.

A high-pressure common-rail fuel injection system plus variable geometry turbocharger, Start/Stop technology and a sophisticated Engine Control Unit with some 150 patented control functions, contribute to the outstanding fuel economy.

While engine efficiency was a prime objective in the design brief, so also were minimising noise, vibration and harshness to produce a more sophisticated power unit.

Clearly, we have succeeded in these areas too, as revealed by those who have driven the Zafira Tourer which also uses the 136PS variant. Autocar (click here for full review) reported ‘…the new engine is a remarkably smooth and quiet affair, despite its modest displacement and – for its size – relatively high output’, while in CAP Extras (click here) Martin Ward commented: ‘The car lived up to its expectations with reduced engine noise intrusion in the cabin. This combined with hardly any road or wind noise made it a very quiet and refined drive.’

The compact nature of this new engine design also promises much for the future, as it will permit lower bonnet lines and allow more cabin space in forthcoming designs.

AVAILABILITY

Order Banks open Friday 15 November.

First to be available will be the 136PS version in Sports Tourer models with first deliveries starting in January 2014, with hatchbacks following a month later. Deliveries of the 110PS version for both hatchback and Sports Tourer models are due in April 2014.

Meanwhile, Order Banks for Zafira Tourer and Meriva models with this new engine are already open.
