MOBILE APPS
iPHONE
- AA Fuel Prices
If you're looking to keep your fuel bills down (and let's face it, who isn't?) then
this app is an essential. It identifies your location and tells you the five cheapest
petrol stations in the vicinity based on up-to-date prices for the fuel your van
takes. If any app pays for itself in days, this one does.
-
TomTom UK and Ireland
Since this app hardly needs an introduction, we'll simply talk about the latest
features: HD traffic for the latest traffic info and shortcuts; Google local search
finds local businesses and shops and navigates you there; music fading, so your
music gently fades for Tomtom's driving instructions; iPod player support and speed
camera alerts.
- iHUDisplay & Speed
iHUDisplay is truly an app for the 21st Century van driver. It projects your vital
driving information – speed, compass direction, local time, and warnings of forthcoming
speed cameras – onto the windscreen. Eye-catching in every way, the iHUDisplay is
as impressive as it is useful.
- Cams ahoy! Europe
The title says it all. No one knows where all those cheeky little cameras are hidden better
than cams ahoy! With near 100% coverage, this app is perfect for those who don't
want to take any chances.
- Parking app
It isn't just speeding fines you want to avoid – parking fines are just as bad.
With parking app you can mark where you've parked and set a timer to remind you
when your parking meter is going to run out. You can even check where 'street sweeping'
is due to occur to avoid an unnecessary fine. Yet another app that's worth its weight
in gold.
- Dynolicious
If you love facts and figures and don't believe anything until you've tested it
for yourself, Dynolicious is here to save the day. It uses the iPhone's built-in
'accelerometer' to measure your van's 0-60 acceleration. For that matter you can
use the application on any car or van you choose. The perfect app if you're mad
for measurement.
- Driver's Log
Keep a comprehensive record of all your driving statistics (trips, mileage, fuel
consumption and expenses) for anything from one van to a whole fleet. This really
is an app that's as clear and straightforward as it sounds. Get reports in HTML
or CSV format - on screen, via E-mail or even to your desktop browser via local
Wi-Fi.
- BBC Sport 606
Well it can't all be work, work, work, can it? And since this app is free – it's
got to be worth a punt. BBC Sport 606 gathers together all the latest news from
BBC Sport including comments from the Radio 5 live discussion forum (606) to provide
you with this comprehensive browse through all the latest from the BBC sports desk.
BLACKBERRY
- DriveSafely
Put an end to messaging madness on the road. DriveSafely reads your text messages
and emails out loud so you can concentrate on the road. This app is absolutely free,
there's no complicated software to install, and it's 'lightweight' so it doesn't
slow down your BlackBerry. You can even dictate your replies. It's too intelligent
for words.
- trackIT: Vehicle Edition
Whether you want to keep track of all the facts and stats for just one van or a
whole fleet, trackIT can handle it. All your van's info is available at the touch
of a button: purchase and insurance information, mileage, maintenance, repairs and
fuel consumption statistics – the lot. You can even view your data trends using
built-in graphs.
- Google Maps
Could Google Maps be the end for Satnav? Let's put it this way, as long as you've got
good reception where you're driving, there are few things Google Maps can't do for
you. Directions (including finding your current location), voice activated search,
local information, street view, voice control, up-to-the-minute travel information,
and more...
- Mileage Manager
What can you store on your Mileage Manager? Date, Trip Purpose, Place Visited, Odometer
Start, Odometer Finish, Distance, Reimbursement Rate, Amount, Tolls, Parking, Category.
Perhaps a more appropriate question would be: what can't you store? This is a comprehensive
app that allows you to sort, categorise and export your trips with no hassle.
- VQ CarFinder
Forgotten where you parked? It's not a problem... car finder automatically remembers
it for you. Yes, automatically. So now you can even forget to programme in where
you parked, and you'll still be OK. Just press a button and your BlackBerry GPS
will guide you back to your parking space. Free up your own memory space with VQ
CarFinder.
- Trapster
Say hello to the Trapster. It's as vigilant about warning you as you approach police
speed traps, red light cameras, and speed cameras as the Police are about enforcing
speeding regulations. Fortunately we know Movano drivers would never consider breaking
the speed limit. Trapster will ensure that you always stay on the right side of
the law.
- e-Mobile GPS Traffic
Never get caught in a jam again with e-Mobile GPS Traffic. Colour-coded live traffic
flow and traffic incident reports, real-time traffic information direct to your
device, directions and traffic conditions to points of interest with detailed maps.
There's no reason to ever be caught in traffic again (with a bit of luck, at least.)
- Viigo
Life can't all be about parking and directions. Viigo keeps you bang up to date
with live sports scores and schedules as well as loads of other essential stuff
– news, weather, entertainment, flight schedules and status, film screening times,
online shopping, Twitter, podcasts and more. Wherever you go, don't forget your
Viigo.
ANDROID
- Car finder Forgetting where
you parked has never been so much fun. Car Finder is an Augmented Reality (AR) app
which projects the position of your parked car on top of the camera view so you
simply hold your iPhone up in front of you and follow it as if you were reading
a compass.
- aCar The more you
demand of aCar, the more it can offer you. From storing your vehicle's details (make,
model, license plate etc.), to tracking the fuel mileage or the expenses of your
vehicle (or vehicles). You could use it to know if your vehicle operates at its
peak or to give you a reminder when it's time to check your van in for some maintenance.
- Fuel Prices Plus UK
The phrase 'does what it says on the tin' is overused, but here it's appropriate.
If you want to buy the cheapest petrol, diesel or LPG in your area, Fuel Prices
Plus UK provides accurate, up-to-date information. You'll get a colour coded price
list for the five best value petrol stations near you: green the cheapest, red the
most expensive.
- Virtual compass
How's your sense of direction these days? What would you do if you found yourself
in the middle of nowhere and your Satnav was down? Would you panic? Would you head
back the way you came? Would you phone a friend? Or would you open your virtual
compass app and work it out the old-fashioned way? Whatever you choose, it's nice
to have the option.
- Google maps Could
Google Maps be the end for Satnav? Let's put it this way, as long as you've got
good reception where you're driving, there are few things Google Maps can't do for
you. Directions (including finding your current location), voice activated search,
local information, street view, voice control, up-to-the-minute travel information,
and more...
- Sherpa Had a hard
day on the road? Feel like a bite to eat at a place that isn't on the side of the
motorway? Sherpa is your guide. Not only does it have all the local knowledge (restaurants,
pubs, cinemas and more) but it learns your favourite things so it can make just
the right recommendations. Don't hit the road without it!
- Car mode
Switch your phone to car mode, and all calls will automatically be diverted through
the phone's speakers so you can chat, hands-free. A simple application, but a really
useful one. Now once you're on the road, you can focus on the road and not fiddling
about with your phone...
- Google Scoreboard
He shoots, he scores. Google Scoreboard allows you to access daily sports scores
for all your favourite sports – from football to boxing via snooker and tennis.
Get live in-game notifications for your favorite teams and follow matches without
taking your eye of the road. If you love sport, you can't lose with Google Scoreboard.
