Summer Car Maintenance & Checks

With the long journeys and warm weather in summer, it’s essential to keep your car in good condition. There are a few summer car maintenance checks that you can do easily and quickly throughout the summer months.

Spotted anything that needs replacing, topping up or a closer look? Get in touch with the team at your local Vauxhall Retailer and they can help to see what needs to be done and give you advice.

Before you get started, make sure your car is parked somewhere safe and that the handbrake is on and the ignition off.

These liquids are constantly used, so be sure to do regular checks to confirm your car is in the best condition it can be. All of the fluids are under the bonnet and marked with yellow caps to help you find them.

  • Screen wash: Top up regularly so you can keep the windscreen clean and visibility good.

  • Coolant: Keep an eye out for leaks around the hoses. Gently rock the reservoir to see the fluid move. Make sure it’s between the minimum and maximum markings, and top it up if necessary.

  • Oil: Pull out the dipstick and wipe it clean. Re-insert it completely then pull out again. You’ll see the level of the oil, which should be between the minimum and maximum markings.

  • Brake fluid: This reservoir is clear, which means you can check the level without opening the cap. Gently rock it to see the fluid move. Make sure it’s between the minimum and maximum markings.

Wheels & Tyres

Your tyres need to be checked all year round, and they definitely shouldn’t be neglected during the summer months. Check your tyre pressures are correct, because over or underinflated tyres are hazardous. This information is available in your Owner’s Manual for you to check. Make sure your tyres aren’t damaged, including cracks and uneven wear. You should also check that your tyre treads are over 2mm in depth. And also, don’t forget your spare tyre.

Windscreen and Wipers

Check your windscreen is free from cracks. They can be off-putting and dangerous, especially if they’re in the driver’s line of sight.

Worn wipers can damage your windshield and also put you off while driving. Make sure that you replace them if necessary, so you can have a comfortable journey.

Check for cracks in your lights’ covers and check that all lights are working properly. Make sure the exterior is clean so you use them to their full potential.

Check that your pedals are working correctly, and make sure your brakes feel responsive. If you have any concerns then contact your local Vauxhall retailer.

Make sure your handbrake can hold the car, and that the lever doesn’t pull too high. Test this before setting out on any car journeys.

Air conditioning

Air conditioning keeps the driver and passengers cool and happy, while providing a suitable temperature for your car. If your air conditioning doesn’t seem to be getting cold, the chances are that you have a leak in the system. Make sure you get this checked by your local Vauxhall retailer.

Clean Car

Keeping your car exterior clean protects the paint from the sun, as well as protecting it against birds and insects. While your car is shining, check for scratches and damages before any corrosion starts.

Make sure your mirrors are clean and in good condition so you have full visibility when driving.

Finish off your cleaning with some wax, which will protect it even more.

Driver and Passengers:

Make sure your passengers are kept hydrated and can have regular bathroom breaks, as well as being able to stretch their legs occasionally.
