Vehicle Excise Duty - effective 1 April 2018: changes only apply to passenger cars registered from 1 April 2018. Vehicles registered before this date will continue to be taxed under the previous regime.
First year VED is calculated on the vehicles CO2 emissions, £0 VED only applies to vehicles with zero CO2 emissions. Standard rate VED (payable from year 2 onwards) is based on a flat rate of £140 per year. This applies to all vehicles except those with zero CO2 emissions. These will continue to benefit from £0 VED.

Note: There is an additional £310 charge added to the standard rate VED (not first year rate) for years 2-6 for any vehicle with a price (including options) above £40,000. Price in this instance excludes first registration fee and first year VED.
