What is AdBlue®?

AdBlue® (also called Diesel Exhaust Fluid) is an odorless, colorless clean and non-toxic fluid that consists purely of 32.5% urea and 67.5% water.

As it is mostly water, it freezes at -11°C (a 32.5% concentration is the lowest freezing point of a urea water solution), so to allow the vehicle to run under all conditions, all AdBlue® tanks are equipped with a heater that will defrost sufficient liquid for the emission reduction.

What is the SCR technology?

SCR means Selective Catalytic Reduction and is a technology used for reducing nitrogen oxides (NOx) from the exhaust gas of diesel engines. It is based on AdBlue® (also called Diesel Exhaust Fluid), a 32.5% urea solution in purified water, which is injected into the exhaust pipe. The urea in the AdBlue® releases ammonia (NH3) with the exhaust gas high temperatures and this ammonia reacts with nitrogen oxides (NO and NO2) in the catalytic converter to form harmless nitrogen (N2) and water (H2O) vapour.

Are there alternatives to SCR technologies?

SCR technologies are the latest state of technology on the path towards future emission requirements. It is the reason why Vauxhall decided to implement BlueInjection (Vauxhall´s SCR technology) to the entire diesel fleet starting as of 2018.

How often do I need to top-up AdBlue®?

The driving range depends on the individual driver profile, vehicle load and engine.
But normally you should be able to cover a distance of approximately 2,485 miles till your tank is empty if your car is equipped with the 2.0 CDTI engine, or even 4,038 miles in the case of the 1.6 CDTI.
Whatever happens, an indicator integrated into the on-board computer will warn you when the fluid level is getting low and you need to top-up.

What happens if I don't top-up?

If the AdBlue® tank is empty, the car will not restart once the ignition is turned off! This is not a fault, but a required feature of the system.
If this stage is reached the system will need a full top-up before the car can be restarted.

What should I pay attention to when buying AdBlue®?
  • First you should pay attention to the trademark AdBlue® and the standard ISO 22241-1 as well as DIN 70070.
  • Also we strongly advise you to only use bottles or canisters with a sealed interface to the filler pipe (usually with a screwed adapter). Like this you minize risk of spillage.
  • Finally since AdBlue® has a limited durability, check the date of expiry before refilling.
Since AdBlue® is already used in commercial vehicles, can AdBlue® be refilled at truck filling stations?

We do not recommend to refill at the AdBlue® pumps that exist in many petrol stations for commercial vehicles (trucks and busses) as the flow rate is too high for a passenger car.
In addition, most truck nozzles need to be released by a magnet insert in the filler head of the vehicle, which is not present in any Vauxhall passenger car.
The good news is that there is a growing number of petrol stations across Europe, who offer low flow AdBlue® pumps for passenger cars. Refilling with such a pump is as easy as refilling diesel fuel

What should I do if I spill AdBlue® onto my car and/or clothes?

If small quantities of AdBlue® come into contact with the vehicle’s paintwork, for example, wipe them off and if necessary rinse the area with water.
If you ever spill some AdBlue® on your clothes and/or hands, just rinse out thoroughly with clear water.

Is there an option to have a bigger AdBlue® tank?

Vauxhall vehicles do not have this option. For each vehicle there is only one tank size that has been designed to optimize package and weight restrictions.

Who is the manufacturer of AdBlue®?

AdBlue® is a registered trademark of the VDA, for which General Motors (Vauxhall´s mothercompany) has a worldwide license covering all brands. It is manufactured by chemical companies, and only licensed manufacturers and distributors may use the name "AdBlue®".

Already have a Vauxhall Diesel with AdBlue®?


Each AdBlue® tank is equipped with sensors that will trigger a series of messages when the fluid is running low.

There will be three intervals:

  • When remaining range = 1,491 miles (or lower depending on consumption) - A warning light will shortly be displayed on your on-board computer.
  • When remaining range < 1,087 miles - A warning will come up and will be repeated every time you turn on the ignition.
  • When remaining range = 559 miles – a warning will flash until you top up.


Cars fitted with the BlueInjection system need AdBlue® refills approximately every 2,485-4,038 miles. But don´t worry, an indicator in the dashboard will inform you when levels are running low.

If the AdBlue® tank is depleted, the system will need a full top-up before the car can be restarted.
