Vauxhall Astra VXR Extreme at the Geneva Motor Show

Highlights from the 84th Geneva Motor Show

The annual Motor Show in Geneva is always one of the most exciting events in the Vauxhall/Opel calendar, and 2014 was no exception. Here are some highlights.

Vauxhall ADAM Rocks at the Geneva Motor Show

ADAM ROCKS ready to roll

Rocking this year’s show was the production model of our funky urban mini-crossover, the ADAM ROCKS.

First previewed as a concept at the 2013 show, this taller, wider, more rugged version of the ADAM family has a full-length electric-folding canvas roof and is wrapped in protective, anthracite-coloured cladding for a tough, muscular look. It’s also the first Vauxhall to feature the punchy new 115PS 1.0-litre ECOTEC three-cylinder turbo engine.

New 1.0-litre triple engine

Developed at our International Technical Development Centre, this all-aluminium petrol engine comes in a 90PS version as well as the 115PS version launched in the ADAM ROCKS. With Start/Stop functionality as standard, this greener version provides combined-cycle fuel consumption as low as 62mpg, with CO2 emissions of just 99g/km.

Vauxhall ADAM S at the Geneva Motor Show

Seductively sporty ADAM S

Also on show was our hot new performance model, the close-to-production ADAM S. Featuring a 150PS 1.4-litre turbo ECOTEC engine – plus sports-tuned suspension, VXR braking and distinctive ‘Red ’n Roll’ styling – it’s set to top our super-cool small car family.

Vauxhall Astra VXR Extreme at the Geneva Motor Show

Low-weight, high-power VXR

With over 300PS generated from its 2.0-litre turbo engine, the Astra VXR EXTREME is our most powerful front-wheel drive ever. Derived from the Astra Cup racing car which competed in the 2013 Nürburgring Endurance Championship, it’s the lighter, more powerful, street-legal sibling of the current Astra VXR. A positive response at the show means that the EXTREME will now go into a limited-edition production run as soon as possible.

New 1.6-litre ‘whisper diesel’

We also previewed our cleanest ever mid-size diesel engine, the super-smooth 1.6 CDTi ‘whisper diesel’ engine – now available in the Astra as well as the Zafria Tourer and Meriva. Quiet and refined, it’s one of the best engines in its class for noise and vibration thanks to an efficient combustion process with multiple injection, re-designed components and the use of acoustic covers.

The next level of vehicle connectivity

Last but not least, we announced plans to introduce OnStar – a leading provider of powerful 4G LTE wi-fi connection in the US, Canada, China, and Mexico – to our passenger car range, beginning in 2015.

“OnStar will make driving in Europe safer and more relaxed,” said Dr Karl-Thomas Neumann, CEO of Opel/Vauxhall. “With OnStar, drivers will enjoy high-speed data made possible by OnStar 4G LTE, and we will take a major step towards realising our vision of connectivity – the Vauxhall Monza Concept that we presented in autumn 2013.”
