Established in 1903, Vauxhall is the only volume manufacturer continuously building vehicles in the UK for over 100 years. As a major contributor to the UK economy, around 28,000 people are employed directly or indirectly through the company's activities, Vauxhall's direct head count amounting to about 4,000 people at its Luton, Ellesmere Port and other sites. 15,500 people work within our Retail Network, and a further 7,000 are employed within our UK supply chain, providing all the millions of parts and many essential services the company uses every day.
Vauxhall sales amounted to almost 150,000 vehicles in the first half of 2011 alone – achieving a market share of 11.95% whilst 90% of the vehicles built at Vauxhall's Ellesmere Port plant and 65% of the vans built in Luton are bound for export, thus further underlining Vauxhall's value to the country's economy.
Our Luton plant, with 1,085 employees, produces 68,000 units a year in two shifts, with the potential for as much as 100,000 units a year in three shifts. The Luton plant has not only produced a van that has won ’Best Medium Van’ at the Van Fleet Awards no less than seven times, but in June 2011, the plant achieved 13.9 million hours worked without a Lost Work Day case.
Our Ellesmere Port plant produces the sixth generation Astra 5-door hatchback, the Astravan and is the sole manufacturer in Europe of the Astra Sports Tourer. The plant has a headcount of 2,100 and the capacity to produce 187,000 units a year on three shifts.
In 2007, Ellesmere Port became the first UK manufacturer to receive the Energy Efficiency Accreditation and in 2010 became the first European manufacturing plant to achieve the Wildlife Habitat Accreditation.
