Driving in Europe

If you’re planning to drive to Europe this summer, it's important to check local road rules and regulations in advance. They’re not the same as in the UK.

Here are some tips on what to take to Europe.

Key documents to take

  • Your valid full (not provisional) driving licence
  • A copy of your DVLA driver record and a licence check code, if needed
  • An International Driving Permit, when necessary
  • Your vehicle registration document (V5c) – the original, not a copy
  • Your motor insurance certificate
  • Your passport(s)
  • Your travel insurance documents.

For some countries, you’ll also need a visa.

Make sure your documents are in order – you may be asked to show them at any time while driving in the EU.

Key EU regulations to consider

GB sticker

Always display a GB sign when driving in the EU. If your number plates include the GB Euro-symbol (Euro-plates), you won’t need a conventional GB sticker.

Reflective jackets

In many countries, all drivers have to carry reflective jackets by law. You must wear these if you leave your vehicle in an emergency or breakdown situation.

If you hire a vehicle, always check the rental company has supplied jackets.

Headlight adjustment

If you’re taking your own car abroad, headlamp-beam converters will help you avoid dazzling oncoming traffic at night.

Warning triangle

Always carry a warning triangle in your boot. This is a legal requirement in some countries.

Travel insurance

Remember to take out travel insurance so that you're covered for accidents and emergencies abroad.
