HOW DOES MOTABILITY WORK?

FAQs about the scheme and Vauxhall Motability

Whether you’re new to Motability or an existing customer who wants to understand more about the scheme and what we have to offer at Vauxhall, we've divided some of the most frequently asked questions and answers into sections below.

DO I NEED TO SPEND MY FULL MOBILITY ALLOWANCE TO GET A VAUXHALL CAR ON THE MOTABILITY SCHEME?

No, you do not need to spend your full Mobility allowance to lease a Vauxhall car on the scheme. We have a number of Fixed Weekly Rental models such as ADAM, Corsa and Viva, which cost less than your weekly allowance. See our offers and prices for more information.

WHAT DOES NIL ADVANCE PAYMENT MEAN?

Nil advance payment means you do not have to pay a lump sum in addition to the fixed weekly rate of the vehicle to lease your chosen car. Instead you simply exchange all of your weekly mobility allowance and nothing more.

The Vauxhall Motability team works hard to ensure our range includes Nil advance models that are highly suited to our customers, such as the Mokka X Active 1.4i, Astra 1.4i SRi Hatchback and Sports Tourer and Crossland SE 1.2i. See our Cars, Prices and Offers page for more information.

WHAT IF I WOULD LIKE TO PAY FOR OPTIONAL EXTRAS WITH MY OWN MONEY?

We recognise our disability allowance customers have a range of needs and preferences. That means we offer a number of different trim levels with the option of paying an advance out of your own finances should you prefer to do this.

On the pages for each of the cars in our Motability range, you can see which additional features are available on each model. Alternatively, you can use our ‘Help me choose’ tool to discover which vehicles we recommend for your needs.

You can also speak to your local retailer to discuss options and prices and arrange a test drive.

IS AN ADVANCE PAYMENT A DEPOSIT THAT I’LL GET BACK LATER?

If you choose a vehicle with an Advance Payment, it means you’ll need to pay the specified lump sum out of your own finances and this contributes to the payment of the car on top of your mobility allowance.

Because it is part of the payment you will not receive it back at any point. However, it will be fixed at the figure quoted when you order your vehicle.

You may be required to pay a holding deposit when you order your new car. However, this will be deducted from your Advance Payment when you collect it.

WHEN DO I HAVE TO PAY AN ADVANCE PAYMENT?

Your local retailer will confirm whether your advance is payable before, or on the day, you collect your new car.

CAN I TRADE IN MY PRIVATELY-OWNED CAR?

If your preference is a Vauxhall model that requires an Advance Payment and you are new to the Motability scheme, you can speak to your retailer about trading in your car against the advance.

DO I NEED TO PAY FOR MY CAR TO BE SERVICED?

The cost of each service, plus maintenance repairs for the wear and tear of your vehicle, are all included in your Motability package. In addition, tyre repair and replacement, windscreen repair and a 60,000 mileage allowance, over three years, are also included.

WILL I RECEIVE A COURTESY VEHICLE EXACTLY LIKE MINE WHILE I WAIT?

As a Motability customer, while your car is being serviced, our retailers will endeavour to provide you with a courtesy vehicle that is close to your existing vehicle model and trim.

This is more likely to be possible if you provide your retailer with at least three weeks’ notice of your requirements. However, please note it will not always be possible to provide a similar vehicle.

WILL I HAVE TO PAY FOR SPECIAL INSURANCE AS A DISABLED DRIVER?

Insurance and personal accident cover for up to two named drivers, and insurance cover for driving abroad are all included in your Motability package. Your vehicle’s MOT, road tax and full breakdown assistance are also included.

How can I get started with choosing the right car for my disability?

You may find our Help Me Choose tool helpful. It allows you to enter some of the things you may need as a driver or passenger.

For example, the height of the seats, width of the doorways, whether it has heated seats or steering wheel or driving safety features, etc. It will provide you with suggestions of models that meet your requirements.

Alternatively, each of the car model pages highlight relevant features for Motability customers and anything additional that is available with each trim level. These pages also provide accessibility measurements, such as doorframe height and width etc.

WILL IT COST ME EXTRA TO HAVE MY CAR ADAPTED FOR MY DISABILITY?

Many adaptations are included in your Motability package. More information is included on our our adaptations page .

CAN I TEST DRIVE AN ADAPTED CAR?

We understand the thought of driving an adapted car for the first time can be worrying. For more information on how and where to test drive an adapted Vauxhall model, visit our adaptations page .

HOW DO I KNOW WHICH CAR ADAPTATIONS ARE SUITABLE FOR MY DISABILITY?

You can either speak to your local Vauxhall Retailer who will point you in the direction of an Adaptation partner, or visit  our adaptations page for a quick understanding of some of the options available to you.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I’M ELIGIBLE FOR MOTABILITY?

To be eligible for Motability, you, or the person you care for – which could be your child or parent, must have the Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance or Enhanced Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment.

Alternatively, you, or they, need to be receiving the War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement or Armed Forces Independent Payment.

You can find out more on our What is Motability? page. Or, if you haven’t applied for your mobility allowance yet, or got a copy of your award notice that provides details of your allowance entitlement, you can contact the Department of Work and Pensions to ask for help.

DO I HAVE TO BE THE DRIVER TO RECEIVE MOTABILITY?

Many Motability customers are passengers as they are too young or unable to drive. You can name up to two named drivers on your insurance which could be your friends, family or another carer. However, they must only use the car for your benefit as a disabled person.

DOES THE MOTABILITY CUSTOMER ALWAYS NEED TO BE IN THE CAR?

As a carer, you may need to run errands while the disabled person you care for is not in the car. As long as they, as the Motability customer, benefit from the trip you are making, this is acceptable.

I AM NO LONGER ELIGIBLE FOR MOTABILITY, WHAT DO I DO NOW?

You may have lost your mobility allowance or been moved to different rate through PIP. If you are no longer eligible for Motability and need to return your car, you should speak to your retailer to arrange this. They will also be happy to discuss a number of options with you for leasing or purchasing Vauxhall vehicles outside of the scheme.

HOW DO I KNOW IF MY CHOICE OF CAR IS AVAILABLE?

Your local retailer will be able to give you full details of whether your choice of car is in stock or needs to be ordered.

HOW DO I ORDER MY FIRST MOTABILITY CAR?

Once you are ready to place your order the process is simple and will be handled by the Motability specialist at your local dealership. You will need to bring the following things with you:

  • Your driving license if you wish to drive.
  • Certificate of entitlement from either the Department of Work and Pensions or Veterans UK.
  • Proof of address (e.g. recent utility bill or bank statement).
  • Named drivers’ driving licences and consent for their details to be checked against the DVLA driver licence database (if your named driver is unable to come with you to the dealership, they must complete a Driver Consent Form)
  • Details of any previous accidents and driving convictions that you or your named drivers have.

You should be there to place the order yourself, unless you have a legal appointee to represent you.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE FOR MY VEHICLE TO BE DELIVERED?

Your local retailer will be able to tell you this. If you haven’t got in touch yet, you can find your nearest Motability specialist below.

I AM UNDER 25. ARE THERE ANY RESTRICTIONS I SHOULD BE AWARE OF?

Drivers under 25 are restricted to cars with an ABI Insurance Group 16 or lower and with a power output of 115 brake horse power (BHP) or less (this does not apply to Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles).

It is therefore important to consider, before you choose your car, whether one of your named drivers is likely to be aged under 25 during your lease.

CAN I RETURN MY MOTABILITY CAR EARLY?

All of our Motability models are leased for a three-year period and cannot be returned before the end of the agreement.
