What is Motability?

WHAT IS MOTABILITY?

The Motability Scheme is designed to help people with a wide range of disabilities to get out and about.

It gives you access to a brand new car that is exactly right for your particular needs. Or those of the person you care for, which could be your parent or child.

Vauxhall has been a founding partner since the scheme began in 1977, and we’re here to help you get started on your own Motability journey.

Giving You Independence

For many, it means having some independence. Being able to drive yourself, or be driven, to see friends or your doctor, or go out for the day.

Motability helps you to get on the road with a brand new car every three years. And with most of your running costs covered by your allowance, you only need to worry about paying for your fuel.

What’s Included
  • Insurance and personal accident cover for up to two named drivers, and passengers
  • Insurance cover for driving abroad
  • Servicing and maintenance
  • Full breakdown assistance
  • Tyre repair and replacement
  • MOT, road tax and windscreen repair
  • 60,000 mileage allowance over three years

Let’s Go

The scheme offers a wide range of adaptations, from driving controls to accelerators. Many of these will be covered in your agreement.

To join, you first need to see whether you are eligible. We can then help you find the right Vauxhall, and our friendly and experienced Retailers will take it from there.

Am I or the person I care for eligible for Motability?

Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance (HRMC DLA)

As of April 2023, this allowance is £71.00 per week.

  • If you are aged between 16 and 64, you must have 12-months of your allowance remaining to be eligible for the scheme.
  • If you have less than 12-months, your mobility component will now be assessed through Personal Independence Payment (see below).
  • If you were 65 on or before 8 April 2013 (20 June 2016 in Northern Ireland) and have 12 months or more left on your DLA higher rate mobility component, you are eligible for Motability.
  • If your child is under 16 and has 12 months or more left on their DLA higher rate mobility component, they are eligible for Motability.
  • If your child does not yet have the Disability Living Allowance higher rate mobility component you can determine whether they are eligible here.

Enhanced Rate Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (ERMC PIP)

As of April 2023, this allowance is £71.00 per week.

  • As part of the government’s Welfare Reform programme, for disabled people aged between 16 and 64, Disability Living Allowance (DLA) is being replaced by the Personal Independence Payment (PIP) benefit.
  • This process began in April 2013 in Great Britain and 20 June 2016 in Northern Ireland.
  • You must have 12-months of your allowance remaining to be eligible for the Motability Scheme.
  • If you have less than 12 months remaining or you have received a letter from the DWP inviting you to apply for PIP, you can call the Motability Customers Services team on 0300 456 4566 to discuss extending the lease on your current car so you can keep it until you find out the result.
  • If you are no longer eligible to use the Scheme but joined before 2013, you will be offered a transition support package by Motability.
  • Your nearest Vauxhall Motability Retailer will be happy to discuss your options with you.

War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS)

As of April 2023, this allowance is £79.25 per week.

  • If you are receiving the War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement, which is provided by Veterans UK, you are eligible for Motability.

Armed Forces Independent Payment (AFIP)

  • The Welfare Reform Act 2012 introduced AFIP as a new allowance. If you are receiving the Armed Forces Independent Payment, you are eligible for Motability.
